How Acupuncture Supports Fertility

From a Western perspective, acupuncture regulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis — the hormonal command chain governing your entire reproductive cycle. It improves blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, reduces the cortisol and inflammatory markers that interfere with ovulation, and directly improves insulin sensitivity — critical for women with PCOS.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, fertility depends on the smooth flow of Qi and Blood through the body, and the strength of the Kidney system — which governs reproductive health. Treatment addresses the specific pattern causing your fertility challenge, not a generic protocol.

IVF Support: What It Looks Like

If you're doing IVF, the ideal time to start acupuncture is 3 months before your retrieval cycle — egg development takes approximately 90 days, so treatment begun during this window has the greatest impact on egg quality. During the stimulation phase, weekly sessions help manage side effects and support follicle development.

Treatment on or around the day of egg retrieval and embryo transfer has the strongest clinical research support. A landmark study in the British Medical Journal found acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer significantly improved IVF success rates. Multiple subsequent meta-analyses have confirmed this finding.

Natural Conception

For women trying to conceive naturally, acupuncture is timed to your cycle phases — different points and approaches are used at each phase to progressively normalize ovulation, improve uterine lining, and support implantation. A typical course is 8–12 weekly sessions, with treatment continuing through the first trimester if conception occurs.

Herbal Medicine for Fertility

Chinese herbal medicine is a powerful complement to acupuncture for fertility. Janice often prescribes carefully selected formulas to nourish Kidney Yin and Yang (the foundation of reproductive health), build Blood, and improve egg quality between sessions. All herbs are pharmaceutical-grade and reviewed against any medications or supplements you're taking.

Your Treatment Plan

How fertility treatment
works

01

Fertility Intake

We review your full reproductive history, cycle patterns, prior treatment, lab results, lifestyle, and health history. Tongue and pulse diagnosis give additional insight. You'll leave with a clear picture of your TCM pattern and treatment plan.

02

Cycle-Timed Treatment

Treatment is timed to your cycle phases — follicular, ovulatory, luteal — with specific point prescriptions at each phase. If you're doing IVF, treatment is coordinated with your retrieval and transfer dates. Herbal medicine supports treatment between sessions.

03

Ongoing Support

Fertility treatment requires patience and consistency. Janice tracks your progress each visit, adjusts the protocol based on your cycle and response, and supports you through the emotional weight of the process — not just the physical.

"I've been getting acupuncture from Janice for 5 years now, and I consider her an integral part of my wellness team. She knows the ebbs and flows of my body better than even me most weeks."

Fertility acupuncture
FAQ

The earlier the better. For IVF, ideally 3 months before your retrieval cycle — this covers the full 90-day window to influence egg quality. For natural conception, starting as soon as you decide to try gives the best results. That said, starting at any point provides benefit, including around retrieval and transfer.
Yes. Acupuncture is often most helpful for patients who have had failed cycles — it can address egg quality, uterine receptivity, and the significant physical and emotional toll of IVF. Janice works with many patients preparing for subsequent cycles after previous failures.
Yes — PCOS is one of the conditions with the strongest research support for acupuncture. Studies have shown acupuncture reduces testosterone levels, regulates menstrual cycles, and improves ovulation frequency in women with PCOS. It also improves insulin sensitivity, which addresses one of PCOS's root drivers.
Yes — acupuncture is safe during IVF stimulation and can help manage side effects including bloating, mood swings, and discomfort. Janice uses protocols specifically designed to support rather than interfere with the IVF process, and communicates with your RE as needed.
For IVF support, weekly sessions for 3 months pre-retrieval is ideal, plus sessions around retrieval and transfer. For natural conception, a course of 8–12 weekly sessions timed to your cycle is a typical starting point. Janice will give you a specific plan after your first visit.
Yes. Janice works collaboratively with REs and is happy to coordinate timing and communicate about your treatment. Many REs in the LA area actively refer patients for acupuncture support alongside IVF.
